Tommy Vercetti cannot swim in GTA Vice City, so one misjudged jump off a pier at Ocean Beach or a motorbike flying into the bay ends the attempt instantly, and that single rule shapes how every chase and boat mission plays out. The rest of the city is just as unforgiving in its own neon way, from the ambush that opens the story to the mansion shootout that closes it.

Tommy’s Rough First Night in Vice City

The story opens with a drug deal that goes wrong at the docks, leaving Tommy without the money or the product that Sonny Forelli sent him to buy. Ken Rosenberg, the jittery lawyer who set up the deal, becomes Tommy’s first contact, and the Ocean View Hotel on Ocean Beach becomes his first safehouse. From there Tommy hunts for whoever ambushed the deal, meeting Lance Vance along the way.

The opening missions double as a tour of the eastern island. They also teach the habit that matters most: saving often, because the hotel is the only safe point for a while.

Beginners usually struggle with the same early mission types, especially chases that end in water and shootouts without armor. Picking up the body armor scattered around Ocean Beach and keeping a Uzi or MP5 handy turns these from frustrating to routine, and it is worth learning the bridges to the western island early, since they unlock as the story progresses.

Working for Diaz, Avery and Both Sides of a Feud

Tommy’s employers are the heart of the story. Ricardo Diaz, the paranoid drug lord, hands out increasingly violent jobs, Avery Carrington teaches Tommy how real estate turns violence into profit, and Colonel Cortez offers military-flavored missions from his yacht. Kent Paul hangs around the Malibu Club with gossip that pushes the plot forward.

Little Havana and Little Haiti add their own conflict. Umberto Robina’s Cubans and Auntie Poulet’s Haitians both want Tommy’s help, and the missions for each side play them against one another.

That feud is a favorite with players who enjoy faction stories. The Cuban missions are loud and boastful while the Haitian ones are stranger and more mystical, and doing both gives Tommy a front-row seat as the two gangs tear each other apart.

Buying Up GTA Vice City One Asset at a Time

Midway through the story, Tommy stops working for other people and starts buying the city. Each asset comes with its own mission chain, and finishing that chain switches on a steady income that piles up at the property.

  1. Malibu Club, which unlocks the bank robbery known as The Job.
  2. Print Works, a counterfeiting operation and one of the strongest earners.
  3. Sunshine Autos, which runs on import lists of cars to deliver.
  4. Kaufman Cabs, with taxi-themed missions against a rival cab company.
  5. Film Studio, Boatyard, Pole Position Club and Ice Cream Factory, each with their own small chains.

Assets do more than pay out. Several are required to finish the story, so they work as chapters as much as businesses, and skipping them leaves the final missions locked.

The bank job at the Malibu Club is the asset mission most players remember. It recruits a crew, plans an entry and ends with a getaway through downtown streets, and it feels like the series testing ideas it would later expand on.

Which Asset Pays Off First

Print Works is the usual first purchase among experienced players, because its income is high and its missions are short. Players who care more about story pacing often grab the Malibu Club first instead, since The Job is one of the best missions in the city and opens up the rest of the asset chain.

The Demolition Man Problem in GTA Vice City

Every long-time fan knows the name of this mission. Demolition Man hands you a tiny RC helicopter at a construction site and asks you to carry bombs to specific points on the half-finished building before the timer runs out, all while the helicopter’s flimsy controls fight you.

The fix is altitude. Fly higher than feels natural and drop straight down onto each marker instead of weaving between beams.

The mission is a perfect example of what players criticize about the era’s design. It has nothing to do with Tommy’s skills, it punishes small errors, and it stands between you and the Avery Carrington story. Plenty of players admit they put the controller down for a day after the tenth failure, then beat it on the next try with a calmer approach.

Side Jobs, Hidden Packages and Rampages

  • Paramedic missions, which grant infinite sprint at level 12.
  • Firefighter missions, which make Tommy fireproof.
  • Vigilante missions, which raise maximum armor.
  • Taxi fares, which unlock hydraulic jumps on Kaufman cabs after 100 rides.

These rewards change how the whole city plays. Infinite sprint alone makes on-foot chases trivial, and fireproof Tommy can shrug off Molotovs during gang shootouts, so finishing them early is a common speedrunner and completionist habit.

The hidden packages are the long grind. Scattered across rooftops, alleys and the ends of piers, they unlock better weapons at Tommy’s safehouses every ten finds, and collecting all 100 brings out a Hunter attack helicopter.

Rampages fill in the gaps. Each skull icon starts a timed killing spree with a set weapon, and clearing them all adds a cash bonus and a check mark toward full completion.

Rewards Worth the Grind

If you only chase one side job, make it Paramedic, since infinite sprint changes every on-foot mission. Hunters of 100 percent completion should work through the hidden packages district by district rather than at random, finishing Ocean Beach and Vice Point before crossing to Little Haiti and Downtown.

Keep Your Friends Close and the Final Siege

The final mission brings Sonny Forelli to Vice City to collect what Tommy owes him. Lance Vance’s betrayal comes to a head at the same time, and the story ends with waves of Forelli men storming the Vercetti Estate while Tommy holds the mansion.

Come prepared. Full armor, a stocked M60 and a rocket launcher make the siege much less chaotic.

The fight is a fitting end because it reuses everything the city taught you: cover, crowd control and patience. Players who finished the Vigilante missions and the hidden packages beforehand usually find it the easiest major shootout in the game, which is a satisfying payoff for all that grinding.

Vice City Puzzles Players Keep Asking About

  1. How do you beat Demolition Man? Fly the RC helicopter higher than you think you need and drop straight down onto each target. Avoid weaving through the building’s beams, because collisions waste time and knock bombs loose.
  2. How many hidden packages are there in GTA Vice City? There are 100 hidden packages in total, and every ten unlock new weapons at Tommy’s safehouses. Finding all of them spawns a Hunter helicopter, the strongest vehicle in the city.
  3. Why does Tommy die in water? Tommy cannot swim, so any deep water is fatal. Use boats for water routes and avoid jumps near piers, especially during chases along Ocean Beach.

GTA Vice City still holds up because every system pushes toward one goal: turning Tommy Vercetti from a hunted stranger at the Ocean View Hotel into the owner of the city. Buy the Print Works early, survive Demolition Man with patience, and the final stand at the Vercetti Estate feels like a reward rather than a test.
